Ballarat Station Accessibility – Ministerial Response

Original constituency question from Juliana Addison MP to Parliament –
My constituency question is for the Minister for Transport Infrastructure regarding disability access at the Ballarat train station, a timely question following the excellent session today with the Victorian Disability Advisory Council.
As a part of the Regional Rail Revival program, I was so proud that the Ballarat line upgrade delivered a second platform and track at the Wendouree station as well as an accessible pedestrian overpass, but I know there is always more to do. That is why the Allan Labor government is delivering the Ballarat station upgrade by 2026. My question for the minister is: how will the Ballarat station upgrade improve accessibility to train services and the station precinct for my community?
We look forward to developing a further understanding in greater detail from the Level Crossing Removal Project delivery agency about this project. I look forward to receiving the minister’s response on this project, which will be transformative for my community, particularly for people with disability.
Response from the Hon. Danny Pearson MP, Minister for Transport Infrastructure (12 August 2024) –
I thank the Member for Wendouree for her question and her tremendous advocacy for this fantastic project. I was pleased to recently visit Ballarat station with the Member and thank you for your insights into the future works.
The Ballarat Station Upgrade will enhance accessibility, safety, and connectivity for public transport users, while maintaining the heritage significance of the station.
Accessibility will be improved at Ballarat Station when the Level Crossing Removal Project completes the construction of the new pedestrian overpass, which will be located as close as possible to existing circulation paths, while minimising any impacts on the heritage buildings and main train hall.
The overpass width will allow for two mobility aids or prams to pass each other comfortably. Amenity for users will be enhanced by the weather protection provided by the overpass roof and screenings.
The existing northern entry will be upgraded with a ramp, handrails, stairs, and an automatic door.
The project team will also upgrade some of the platform lighting and tactiles (raised ground markers) that improve wayfinding for vision impaired people to navigate through the station.
On completion of the project, people with disability, and those carrying luggage or pushing a pram, will no longer need to detour outside the station precinct to the Lydiard Street level crossing to cross the rail line.
I look forward to the completion of the construction in 2026 when the Ballarat community can see these accessibility improvements come to life.
