The Big Housing Build in Delacombe – Ministerial Response

Original constituency question from Juliana Addison MP to Parliament –

My constituency question is for the Minister for Housing in the other place regarding our government’s Big Housing Build in my electorate of Wendouree.

Ballarat needs more social and affordable housing, and I am very proud of our government’s investments across the City of Ballarat. One project that I am particularly proud of is the $50 million transformation of the Leawarra neighbourhood in Delacombe. Minister, what progress is being made to deliver the Leawarra neighbourhood housing project in Delacombe?

The majority of the 147 homes in the Leawarra estate were built in the 1970s, and some are no longer fit for purpose. The open spaces are poorly utilised, and residents have told us that they feel unsafe in Leawarra park. The roads through the estate have poor connections to Delacombe Primary and Doug Dean Reserve.

I know that this investment will change lives, and I look forward to the minister’s response.

Response from the Hon. Harriet Shing MP, Minister for Housing (20 September 2024) –

I thank the Member for Wendouree for their question on 21 February 2024 about the Big Housing Build.

As part of the Allan Labour Government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build, we are building more homes for more Victorians in Delacombe. Homes Victoria is replacing the older houses with modern, energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable homes.

Work is underway to deliver 181 homes in Delacombe and a focus is on improving liveability. For example, there will be high-quality street connections and public spaces that best respond to community needs.

All 66 households who previously lived in the area were successfully relocated in December 2023 and the demolition of all vacated dwellings was completed in March 2024.

Community and stakeholder consultation will occur ahead of planning approvals with the Department of Transport and Planning.

Subject to approvals, the Delacombe Big Housing Build project is scheduled for completion in 2028.
